Giancarlo Gonzalez is ditching MLS for Serie A. The Costa Rican has signed with Palermo, leaving the Columbus Crew just seven months after signing for them. The deal is for a reported $5 million, which would be the richest transfer fee MLS has ever received for a defender.

Giancarlo Gonzalez is one of the richest transfers in MLS history.

Gonzalez gained notoriety at the World Cup, where he was excellent for Costa Rica. As the Ticos went deeper and deeper in the tournament, Gonzalez just played better and better, and by the time Costa Rica had gone out, he was being linked to clubs all over Europe.
Palermo were promoted from Serie B and needed to upgrade their team before returning to the top flight. Gonzalez will do just that, giving them a dependable defender who has proven he can shine on the biggest of stages.
The Crew will undoubtedly miss Gonzalez, but he wasn’t the best defender in MLS, merely a very good one. Now they have turned it into a very rich transfer fee. It’s good business on their end and, if he can help keep Palermo stay up, good business by the Italians too.
