2014 Champions League qualifying concluded this week. The results saw Arsenal go through while Napoli and Celtic, among others, exited stage left. In the midst of the action, adidas quietly unveiled this season's match ball for what is arguably the most prestigious club tournament in the world. The new ball is not too much of a departure from the round thing that made its way up and down European pitches over the course of the last few seasons.
The new Champions League ball is more of the same and that’s a good thing

The new Champions League ball features a connecting series of star-shaped panels with an uneven hexagon shape filling the gaps. The surface is covered by a series of small nubs that help control the ball’s flight and keep its movement true in the air.
The star-shaped panels have a black background with a series of exploding triangle in solar red and solar gold emanating from an imaginary line that bisects the ball through the adidas and “Finale” logos. The explosion pattern splits the ball in half for a design move that adidas say “represents the rivalries between the competing teams in this year’s tournament.”
Apart from the mirrored design, there isn’t too much different about the new ball from adidas. Given how it performed in seasons past, that’s not something to complain about.
