Xabi Alonso moves to Bayern Munich

Veteran midfielder Xabi Alonso has completed a move from Real Madrid to Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich have confirmed the capture of midfielder Xabi Alonso from Real Madrid for a fee reportedly in the region of £8 million. The 32-year-old former Spanish international moves to the Allianz Arena on a two-year deal, after spending five years with the Merengues.

He has likely been brought in by the Bundesliga champions to provide cover for his compatriot Javi Martínez, who sustained a serious knee injury in the recent German Supercup win over Borussia Dortmund. Alonso certainly isn't of the calibre of Martínez, but as a stop-gap in defensive midfield, he's a pretty solid signing.

The Basque midfielder started his professional career at Real Sociedad, before moving on to Liverpool in 2004. He spent five years at Anfield before moving onto Madrid, where he added more domestic and European titles to his honours list.

Also made over 114 international appearances for Spain after making his debut in 2003, though announced his retirement from Vicente Del Bosque’s selection on Wednesday.
