Keylor Navas joins Real Madrid

The Costa Rican goalkeeper has completed a deal to join last season’s Champions League winners.

All change in the Real Madrid penalty area. The Spanish super-club have today completed the signing of 27-year-old Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas, paying a buyout clause €10 million to his former club Levante. One of the stars of the 2014 World Cup, Navas will replace Diego López at the Bernabéu, who is on the verge of moving to AS Monaco.

While the World Cup confirmed him as one of the best (and most entertaining) shot-stoppers around, a big move has been coming for Navas for a while. A series of excellent performances in last season's La Liga culminated with an astounding performance against Barcelona, and with just a year remaining on his contract it's been clear that he'd be moving on from Levante. There has reportedly been interest from elite clubs across Europe, including Bayern Munich, Porto, PSG and Real's rivals Atlético Madrid, but it's the Champions League holders that have sealed the deal.

It remains to be seen, however, whether he will begin the season as automatic first-choice. Iker Casillas remains Real Madrid club captain and is a powerful presence in the dressing room, but increasingly error-prone performances over the last two seasons have seen the great Spaniard spending more and more time on the bench. Don't be too surprised if Navas finishes the season as Real Madrid's undisputed No. 1.
