Stephane Mbia returns to Sevilla from QPR

After last season’s successful loan spell, Stephane Mbia is going back to La Liga.

Clive Rose

Stephane Mbia moved to Sevilla on loan last season after Queens Park Rangers were relegated, and they've decided to keep him around going forward. Instead of going back to QPR now that they're in the Premier League again, Mbia has opted to sign for the team he helped make Europa League champions.

Sevilla have strengthened their squad with a large number of attacking midfielders and wingers this summer, but were short on players like Mbia. He’s likely to provide a bit of steel to the center of their midfield, and he can fill in as a central defender as well.

Even though Mbia isn’t the exact same type of player as Ivan Rakitic, they were in need of bodies in the center of midfield in light of his departure to Sevilla. They’ve seemingly opted to replace Rakitic’s playmaking qualities with more advanced players, and will probably play with a slightly more defensive midfield this season.
