Tottenham Hotspur's chase of Southampton forward Jay Rodriguez has combined with the Saints' interest in Tottenham and England winger Andros Townsend to reach the obvious conclusion: rumours of a swap deal! Note that no actual swap deal has materialized, because swap deals are essentially the shark attacks of football transfers; much talked about but exceptionally rare.
Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton linked to swap deal
Andros Townsend for Jay Rodriguez probably won’t happen, but it makes a certain amount of sense.

But that caveat aside, a swap makes a certain amount of sense. Despite worries about Rodriguez’s knee -- he’s still not back from a torn ACL sustained last season -- he’s the perfect wide forward for Mauricio Pochettino’s system, and one can only imagine that the former Southampton manager is well aware of his qualities. The Saints, meanwhile, are deficient on the right wing, and Townsend’s combination of speed and flair would give them a different look to their current tactic of pretending central midfielders are really wingers.
So it’s an interesting idea. But it’s not going to happen, because swap deals don’t happen. Unless this is the time they do?
