AS Monaco have signed Maarten Stekelenburg on loan from Fulham with the hope that he can revive his career and compete for the starting job. The Dutchman was always unlikely to stay with the Cottagers, especially after they were relegated, and he's found a home, at least for a season, with Monaco.

Maarten Stekelenburg will hope to revive his career at Monaco.

Stekelenburg moved to Fulham prior to last season, but he struggled, just as the team did. He also dealt with injury and was limited to just 19 appearances. With the team relegated, he didn’t want to be at Craven Cottage anymore and the club were happy to let him go.
But Stekelenburg’s issues aren’t a year old. He was shaky for AS Roma the year before, helping lead to his exit from the Italian club. His troubles the last two years have seen him go from the unquestioned starter for the Netherlands who had led them to the World Cup final in 2010, to not even making the team for this summer’s tournament.
Meanwhile, Monaco were in need of a goalkeeper after the proposed purchase of Diego Lopez fell through. The plan was for the Real Madrid backstop to start for them, but once that deal was off, they needed another option and Stekelenburg was the best that was left. He will compete with Danijel Subasic for the starting job at the Stade Louis II and Monaco will hope that one of them can look the part of a Champions League goalkeeper.
