Lionel Messi injury: Barcelona star picks up knock, likely to miss World Cup rematch

Argentina will likely be without Lionel Messi when they play Germany.

Lionel Messi was injured in Barcelona's 1-0 win over Villarreal on Sunday and looks unlikely to play in Argentina's friendly against Germany on Wednesday. The extent of the star's injury will not be known until Tuesday.

“Messi has pulled an adductor muscle in right hip, and precautionary measures will be required,” Barcelona said in a statement. “Tests on Tuesday should be able to determine the full extent of the injury.”

There was considerably hype for Wednesday’s friendly -- at least as much hype as a friendly can get -- but Messi’s absence would put a damper on things, even if it is a rematch of the World Cup final.

Messi was able to play all 90 minutes on Sunday despite picking up the adductor injury so odds are that it is not an especially serious injury. With the international dates, Messi could miss two weeks and still be back for Barcelona’s next match. As far as timing goes, Messi couldn’t have picked a better time to pick up a knock.
