Arsenal still trying to sign Danny Welbeck, confident of getting deal done

Yet another turn in the most ridiculous story of deadline day.

Ian Walton

The Danny Welbeck saga continues. First, Tottenham Hotspur were favored. Then, Arsenal were expected to take him on loan. A medical was reported, then denied, while Welbeck's representatives said that he wanted a permanent deal. And now, it looks like that permanent deal might happen.

Sky Sports News are reporting that a deal is on, and Jeremy Wilson of the Telegraph says Arsenal are trying to get it done quickly.

A loan deal made sense for Arsenal in light of Olivier Giroud’s injury, but Arsenal are a bit short of numbers up top even with Giroud fit. Signing Welbeck permanently isn’t going to give Arsenal a huge surplus of strikers.

The big lingering question, though, is how much Arsenal would have to pay Manchester United to sign Welbeck permanently. No one's thrown a number out there, but if United were reportedly asking for a loan fee of £5m, they'd probably want 3-4 times that to sell him outright. It's tough to see Arsenal paying that much in a panic buy situation, but they certainly do have the money.
