Real Salt Lake is going to enter a team into USL PRO next season, joining the LA Galaxy, who were the first MLS club to do such a thing with LA Galaxy II this season. Having a team in USL PRO is a big step in the growth and development for MLS clubs, allowing them to get their reserves serious matches, as well as providing a place for their young players to play as they grow their academies.
RSL names USL team Real Monarchs, but it could have been worse
The Galaxy went conservative with their USL PRO team name, following in the footsteps of some major European clubs like Bayern Munich, who have Bayern Munich II, and Barcelona, who have Barcelona B. Real Salt Lake decided they were going to do nothing of the sort and, thus, Real Monarchs was born.
Seriously, Real Monarchs.

Real Monarchs is a hilarious bad name. It was goofy enough when the MLS club was named Real Salt Lake, obvious pandering to the European crowd, but at least that kind of made sense. It was Real, and then the city name.
Real Monarachs is Real, and then the city name. And translated, it is Royal Monarchs.
THEY NAMED THEIR TEAM THE ROYAL MONARCHS.
So they are the monarchs, but they are the club’s second team. And the clear reserves. But as ridiculous as that sounds, it could have been worse. They could have named their USL PRO team:
- Real Real
- Real Sporting
- Atletico Real
- Real Kings
- Real Presidentes
Consider this: Real Princes would have been better (and sneakily great).
So they are the Real Monarchs, but it could have been worse!
