adidas are not strangers to giving players one-off boots for special occasions. Lionel Messi, for example, was handed a pair to wear in training on his birthday. adidas have also created special editions through their miadidas customization program for Cascadia Cup clashes between the Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers over the last two seasons. We saw more of that for the I-95 Derby clash between the New York Red Bulls and D.C. United at Red Bull Arena on Wednesday night.
adidas hand MLS stars custom boots for I-95 Derby

adidas, a major sponsor of MLS, has a number of the league's players on the books and as a result, got some of the bigger names playing some special boots. All four of the modern silos are represented with DC United's Perry Kitchen in the Predator Instinct and Bill Hamid in the F50 while New York's Dax McCarty was in the Predator and Jamison Olave appeared in the Nitrocharge. The adiPro 11 was also present in the United team while the Red Bull had its own version of the F50.
The match was a hotly-contested affair that was punctuated by Fabian Espindola's admittedly questionable red card at the 32 minute mark. It ended 1-0 with Lloyd Sam striking at the death for the Red Bulls, via an assist by Jamison Olave. Red Bull dominating the shot and possession counts, albeit with the vast majority of the efforts missing the mark. That is until the 93rd minute or so.
