Serie A, Round 2: Fixtures and times for Italy’s second week

Giuseppe Bellini

The teams of Serie A have just one game under their belts, and that one was played before the international break. So you can be forgiven if you’re not entirely sure how things stand in Italy.

Well, it’s much as to be expected. Milan tops the table, thanks to a 3-1 win over Lazio, which sure got Filippo Inzaghi’s managerial career off to a fine start. Wins for Roma, Napoli and Udinese have them in the top five, but Juventus sit just outside, thanks to their inability to grab more than one goal (and an own-goal at that) against Chievo.

Cesena makes a surprising appearance in the top five, after beating Parma in their first match after returning to Serie A. Parma are going to need to bounce back quickly, however, as they’re hosting Milan this week, and the rossoneri will want to prove they are, indeed, back as one of Serie A’s powerhouses.

Rivals Inter need to do much the same, as Walter Mazzarri’s men got their season off the ground with yet another goalless draw, this one to Torino. It’s Sassuolo this week, so Inter should fancy their chances, although the neroverdi don’t seem as great of pushovers as they looked to be last season.

Roma should have no problem with freshly-promoted Empoli, while in theory Napoli should see off Chievo with no problem -- but the Flying Donkeys have been a bit of a thorn in Napoli’s side in recent years. As for Juventus, predicting their result is anything but black-and-white, as they’re set to face Andrea Stramaccioni’s new-look Udinese on Saturday.
