Real Madrid president says he doesn’t know how €80 million James Rodriguez plays

That’s so Real Madrid.

Denis Doyle

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez bought James Rodriguez for €80 million this summer. And he had no idea how the Colombian played.

“I do not know how James plays,” Perez said. “But he had a great World Cup and we wanted him here.”

It’s one thing to assume you have enough talent that you can make it work. That an onslaught of attackers can pressure teams enough to win. But to spend €80 million without having any idea how the player plays? That is really special. And totally Real Madrid.

This is a team that has Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez. Great!

And then two shaky centerbacks, issues at fullback and not a single midfielder who could be called defensive or even a fine tackler. That isn’t much of a football team. How could a team more resources and money than every other team end up with such a thing?

With a president who buys players not knowing how they play.
