Roy Lassiter set the Major League Soccer single-season goal-scoring record in 1996. It wasn't until Chris Wondolowski scored 27 goals in 2012 that Lassiter had to even share the record. But Bradley Wright-Phillips -- yes the man who has always been more famous for his last name than his performances -- is poised to erase both names from the record book after scoring a hat trick against the Seattle Sounders on Saturday to give him 24 with five matches left to play.
Bradley Wright-Phillips is on doorstep of MLS scoring record
Red Bulls forward scores hat trick, needs three more goals in final five matches to tie single-season scoring record.

The three goals he scored were all the types of put-aways he's shown a knack for this season. The first was simply being in the right place at the right time, cleaning up a rebound in the 1st minute. His second was a penalty that he pushed past Stefan Frei, despite the goalkeeper guessing correctly. He finished off the hat trick by finishing off a perfect cross after getting a step on his defender.
While none of the finishes were particularly impressive, that Wright-Phillips has done such a good job putting himself in positions to get them is absolutely worthy of praise. It’s also very similar to how Wondolowski got his 27 goals.
