Sunday was wild in the Premier League, with three seemingly relegation-threatened teams pulling off upset wins against teams who thought they'd be contending for fourth place this season. Between their losses and Liverpool's struggles on Saturday, the big benefactors are Southampton, who look like they're going to have a chance to hang near the top of the table for a long time.
Premier League scores, Week 5: Everton, Manchester United, Tottenham all disappoint
Southampton had a really, really good week.
A big marquee match between Manchester City and Chelsea was Sunday's headliner, and it was an odd one. The match was a dull affair until Pablo Zabaleta's sending off, which led to chances for both teams throughout the rest of the game and a goal by Frank Lampard against his old side.
United led this match 3-1 in the second half. Then they gave up four goals, punctuated by Tyler Blackett’s sending off while giving away a penalty for the Foxes’ fifth. Have fun sorting this out, Louis van Gaal.
This game had basically no chances until James Morrison scored a header in the 74th minute. Then it had no more chances. It was a bad game.
Manchester City 1-1 Chelsea / Full match report
After Zabaleta’s red, Andre Schürrle fired Chelsea ahead off a great cross by Eden Hazard. Chelsea looked like they’d hold on for a simple win, but they had their hearts broken by Lampard, who might have broken his own heart -- he looked like he was about to cry after scoring.
Everton 2-3 Crystal Palace
Neil Warnock appears to know what he's doing, and Everton's defense is an absolute shambles. Romelu Lukaku put Everton up just nine minutes in, but his team didn't do much with that lead. Mile Jedinak converted a penalty to send his team into halftime level, and Everton fell apart in the second half. Frazier Campbell and Yannick Bolasie had Palace up 3-1 by the 69th minute, and Everton couldn't come back. Leighton Baines converted from the spot for Everton in the 83rd minute, but Palace held on to win all three points.
