Toronto FC launch gorgeous BMO Field renovation, expansion

BMO Field is getting bigger and better.

The new BMO Field is going to be the largest soccer-specific stadium in MLS. MLSE, who owns Toronto FC and operates the stadium, broke ground on a $100 million renovation on Tuesday that will see the stadium's capacity increase to approximately 30,000, larger than the StubHub Center's 27,000.

The renovation will be done over two phases, each taking about a year. The first phase will add a second deck to the east stand and bring capacity to 30,000 for next summer’s Pan-Am Games. The second phase will see the roofs added on the east, west and south stands. The work will also see concessions expanded, luxury seating and lounges added and a new HD video board installed.

There is a possible third phase that could be added to the project. That would see the playing surface made longer so as to fit a Canadian football field and allow the Toronto Argonauts to become a tenant. That was in the original renovation plans, but that was dependent on MLSE getting $20 million of public funds, which was denied.

The first two phases will see the city of Toronto contribute $10 million, with MLSE paying the remaining $90 million, as well as any cost overruns.
