Liverpool vs. Everton: Team news and game preview

Alex Livesey

Liverpool and Everton step into Saturday’s Merseyside derby in similarly surprising poor form. They’re both sitting in the bottom half, with the reds having lost their last two matches in a row, while the Toffees boast the Premier League’s worst defense.

Most expect the Premier League table to rearrange itself with these teams near the top of the table eventually, but at least one of them is going to have to spend another week far away from European places. They’re both in need of a big win to get their seasons back on track.

Last season, Everton didn't fare well at Anfield, losing 4-0 in their away Merseyside derby. Even though they enjoyed solid form on either end of the fixture, Everton got blown out by their biggest rivals, and it certainly looks likely that this could happen to them again. Roberto Martinez needs to figure out how to patch up the defense that let in six goals against Chelsea, and fast.

Key Player: Mario Balotelli (Liverpool)

While he hasn’t found the back of the net work great regularity early in his Liverpool career, Mario Balotelli does look every bit the part of an important player for his new side. His movement off the ball has been crucial in creating chances for himself and others, and he should be a bit of a nightmare for Everton to defend. If he can add great finishing to what he’s done for Liverpool thus far, Everton might be down for the count early.

Key Matchup: Everton's attacking midfielders vs. Liverpool's defense

While Romelu Lukaku will be key, he generally doesn't get shut down by an opposing defense. He occasionally disappears against average back lines and can be unplayable for elite ones, so that's partially out of Liverpool's control. What they can control a bit better, however, is the effectiveness of the players running behind Lukaku. Liverpool need to make sure they don't get lit up on the counter by the likes of Steven Naismith and Aidan McGeady.
