The Premier League season started with a fan running onto the field and kicking a ball that had been placed for a free kick. It was hilarious and wonderful, but also illegal. So Jordan Dunn, the man who took to the pitch, was arrested and charged for his exploits.

The judge thought he was cool. So did the Internet.

Passing sentence at Thames Magistrates’ Court in east London, District Judge Gareth Branston said: “You had consumed alcohol and your stride pattern was a bit out of kilter, but to borrow a phrase you did bend it like Beckham.
The judge said the effort was “easily” saved by the West Ham goalkeeper, but referred to Christian Eriksen’s subsequent free kick from the same spot, saying: “I understand that the professional footballer who followed you did not do any better.”
Unfortunately, bending it like Beckham isn’t enough to get out of trouble. The judge still levied a £305 fine on Dunn, who did what any enterprising 22-year-old would do: go to the Internet.
Dunn started a Go Fund Me to pay his fine, and there was no shortage of support. He raised all of the money in hours and didn’t have to pay the fine with a dime out of his own pocket.
