Champions League scores: Athletic beaten, Ajax, Schalke and Porto all drop points

There were plenty of surprises during Tuesday’s Champions League action.

There were plenty of surprises during the second Champions League matchday. Paris Saint-Germain won at home to Barcelona, Athletic were beaten by BATE, and Ajax, Schalke and Porto all dropped points in games they really ought to have won.

The rather more predictable results tended to come in the bigger clashes, with Roma holding Manchester City, Chelsea downing Sporting and Bayern Munich winning away at CSKA Moscow.

Manchester City 1-1 AS Roma / Full match report

City took the lead through a Sergio Agüero penalty in the first few minutes of this match, only for Francesco Totti to peg them back and make history by becoming the oldest Champions League scorer in history.

APOEL 1-1 Ajax

In one of the most surprising results of the round, Champions League minnows APOEL held Ajax to a 1-1 draw in Cyprus. Lucas Andersen gave Ajax the lead just short of the half-hour, four minutes before Gustavo Manduca leveled the scoring from the penalty spot. Ajax dominated, but couldn’t find an all-important second goal.

PSG 3-2 Barcelona / Full match report

A topsy-turvy game in Paris ended with a surprise winner. PSG took the lead through David Luiz, and replied to Lionel Messi’s equaliser with goals from Marco Verratti and Blaise Matuidi. Neymar netted Barcelona’s second 10 minutes into the second half, though it was nothing more than a consolation goal.

Schalke 1-1 Maribor

Schalke’s shaky start to the season continued as they were held to a draw at home to Slovenian side Maribor. Damjan Bohar gave the visitors the lead shortly before halftime, with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar netting Schalke’s only riposte soon after the restart.

Sporting 0-1 Chelsea / Full match report

Nemanja Matić‘s 34th minute goal proved sufficient for Chelsea to sneak past Sporting in Lisbon.

BATE 2-1 Athletic

The matchday’s true surprise came in Belarus, where BATE stunned Athletic Bilbao 2-1 at home. They netted twice in the first half, with Aritz Aduriz’s reply just a consolation.

Shakhtar Donetsk 2-2 FC Porto

In an exciting game in Lviv, Shakhtar went two goals up in the second half courtesy of goals from Alex Teixeira and Luiz Adriano, only to throw it all away. Jackson Martínez netted twice in two minutes at the death, rescuing a point for the Portuguese side.

CSKA Moscow 0-1 Bayern Munich / Full match report

Thomas Müller scored this game’s only goal, from the penalty spot in the first half. Bayern didn’t look particularly dominant and should have conceded on the counter.
