Daniel Sturridge to miss England Euro 2016 qualifier with thigh injury

England’s job against Switzerland just got much tougher.

England will be without Daniel Sturridge when they play Switzerland in their first Euro 2016 qualifier on Monday. The striker injured his thigh in training and has been ruled out of the content.

“Daniel Sturridge picked up an injury on his thigh in training,” an FA spokesman said. “He has had a scan and will now return to Liverpool FC for treatment. He will play no part in the forthcoming Switzerland match.”

Roy Hodgson has not called up a replacement for Sturridge, but the FA did not say that he would not do so. Considering his recent call-ups at the position have been Jermain Defoe, Jay Rodriguez and Andy Carroll, all of whom are out with injuries, odds are that he does not call in a replacement.

With the Liverpool man out, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Rickie Lambert are his remaining strikers. Switzerland are clearly England's toughest competition in the group so this is the worst match the Three LIons could have lost Sturridge for, but the expanded Euros should give them some leeway. With 24 teams now, two teams from each qualifying group make the tournament, and England should have no problem finishing in the top two no matter the injuries.
