Giuseppe Rossi out 4-5 months after another knee surgery

The Fiorentina striker’s knee has let him down again.

Giuseppe Rossi has suffered yet another knee injury, which required yet another surgery. The Fiorentina striker went under the knife on Friday and is now set to miss 4-5 months.

The injury isn’t as bad as Rossi’s previous knee injuries, since the doctor found all of the striker’s ligaments to be intact during the operation. But Rossi did have a lesion to his meniscus, which was repaired.

Rossi first injured his knee in 2011 when he tore his ACL while playing for Villarreal. In a desperate attempt to make Italy’s Euro 2012 team, he pushed himself too hard in training and re-tore the ACL. He finally returned to the pitch last season for Fiorentina, leading Serie A in goals by January, but then he sprained his MCL and was out until May. The injury derailed his plans to make the World Cup team, and he failed to get fit enough to go to Brazil.

The 27-year-old forward has been an excellent goalscorer, scoring at least 15 goals in every season he has been fit since 2008-09. His high came in 2010-11 when he scored 32 goals for Villarreal and last season for Fiorentina found the net 17 times in 24 matches. The only concern for him is his knee, which has sidelined him again.

With Rossi out, Fiorentina will likely lean on Khouma Babacar to partner Mario Gomez up top.
