The winter break was not kind of Madrid who entered Spain's two-week hiatus having continued their amazing winning streak by winning the FIFA Club World Cup. Since that victory over San Lorenzo, Madrid loss a friendly against AC Milan, lost to Valencia in league play, and were shut down 2-0 by Atlético Madrid in the Copa del Rey. The bottom line for Madrid is that they haven't played well. The offense is struggling to break down defenses, and Gareth Bale has been especially poor in the last two matches.

Espanyol are also struggling at the moment, as they’re in the midst of a two-match losing streak of their own. Despite the recent dip in form, they remain in 10th place, comfortably out of the relegation fight.
