FIFA President Sepp Blatter has been provisionally suspended for 90 days, according to BBC Sport. The move follows a meeting by the FIFA ethics committee in response to an announcement from the Swiss Attorney General that criminal proceedings would be opened against the 79-year-old.
Sepp Blatter facing 90-day suspension by FIFA
The 79-year-old remains firm that he will be President.
Blatter stands accused of signing an “unfavorable contract” with the Caribbean Football Union, which “acted against the interest of FIFA.” This is one of several shady deals Blatter is reported to have engaged in with disgraced executive Jack Warner, who was indicted as part of the U.S. Justice Department’s corruption case against FIFA launched in May.
The FIFA President has denied any wrongdoing -- and remained resolute that he will not vacate his position -- despite increasing pressure from sponsors.
In addition to his dealings with Warner, the Attorney General mentioned disloyal payments to UEFA President Michel Platini. There are reports Platini could also be facing a 90-day suspension, however there has been no official announcement at this time.
Blatter -- in response to the suspension -- remains resolute in his position as FIFA President and unwillingness to stand down:
Being told that Judge Eckhert informed Blatter of provisional suspension. Blatter sees self still as FIFA President + will continue to serve
— Amanda Davies (@AmandaJDavies) October 7, 2015 when asked if Blatter has served his final day as FIFA President source emphatically "No, not at all"
— Amanda Davies (@AmandaJDavies) October 7, 2015 The ethics committee cannot level a punishment against Blatter themselves, they can simply recommend that a suspension take place. Ratification of those recommendations has to come from the adjudicatory chamber of the ethics committee, which has yet to reach a decision.
If suspended Blatter would not return to office until late January. FIFA is scheduled to hold presidential elections in February of 2016.
