Chile and Uruguay have both made reasonably strong starts to their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaigns, sitting second and third in the South American qualification table after three rounds. They'll both be hoping to strengthen their early positions yet further when they meet in Montevideo on Tuesday, with a close encounter anticipated. Hosts Uruguay head in on the back of a defeat to early pacesetters Ecuador, while Chile will be looking to bounce back from a draw at home to Colombia.

Chile will look to continue their recent purple patch with a World Cup qualifying win in Uruguay on Tuesday.

On paper these side are very closely matched, but Chile just about head in as favorites. The Copa América winners' recent performances in major tournaments have far outshone those of their Uruguayan rivals, despite Óscar Tabárez's side having plenty of talent in their ranks. This will be the final game of Uruguay striker Luis Suárez's suspension; the Barcelona striker hasn't played a single competitive match for his national team since being sent off for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at last summer's World Cup.
Key player: Alexis Sánchez (Chile)
A big reason Chile have been so successful of late is the performances of winger Alexis Sánchez. Despite being sold by Barcelona last summer, there’s no doubting that the 26-year-old is an elite player, and he’s played a massive part in Arsenal’s recent rise to the status as Premier League title challengers. If Uruguay can keep him quiet for 90 minutes, they’ve won half of the battle.
Recent history
Recent meetings between these sides have been very closely matched. Chile beat Uruguay when they clashed in the quarterfinals of the Copa América in June, though of their nine meetings since 2005, Uruguay have won twice and Chile thrice, with four draws. However, there’s reason for Uruguay to be confident heading into this match: Chile have failed to win in Montevideo since these sides met for the very first time over a century ago.
