Wind blows pass 40 yards backwards for a jaw-dropping own goal

Maybe you should keep the ball on the ground for the rest of the game?

Own goals are a heck of a thing. Sometimes they’re skillful, with an attacker intentionally driving a shot off a defender to create a goal. Sometimes they’re embarassing or unfortunate, with a defender making a silly mistake or just plain caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sometimes, as these English players just learned, they’re the result of Mother Nature having her way with the game.

Crazy wind-assisted goal Thurrock v Romford from LJB on Vimeo.

That’s just nuts. This goal is from Thurrock versus Romford, a match in the Isthmian Division One North League, the eighth tier of the English football structure. A Thurrock player was just trying to do his job and clear the ball up the pitch when a gust of wind grabbed it and threw it in the opposite direction.

In fact, let’s not call that an “own goal.” It may be one by the letter of the law, but let’s face it, the player’s involvement was incidental at best. Can we register “Force Of Nature” as a Romford player?
