Manchester City find themselves joint-top of the Premier League table almost by default as we hurtle at an alarming rate towards the season's midway point. Manuel Pellegrini's side haven't been spectacular but neither has anyone else, and they now look in the strongest position to go on and win the title. They'll look to strengthen their position and open up a gap over second-placed Arsenal with a win at home to Liverpool on Saturday.

Premier League leaders Manchester City will look to open up a gap at the top of the table with a win against Liverpool on Saturday.

The Merseysiders suffered their first defeat under new manager Jürgen Klopp before the international break, going down 2-1 to Crystal Palace. The defeat marked the continuation of a rather slow start to the German's tenure at Anfield, and left them down in 10th place. If they want a return to European action next season, they're going to have to start picking up points.
Key player: Raheem Sterling (Manchester City)
Raheem Sterling won’t necessarily be the most talented player on the pitch when these sides face off on Saturday, but he is the one who everyone will be watching. That’s because he made an acrimonious switch from Liverpool to Manchester City in the summer, handing in a transfer request in a bid to force a move and effectively going on strike until the deal was completed. Suffice to say, the travelling fans are unlikely to give him a warm reception.
Recent history
Recent meetings between these sides have been extremely unpredictable. As a general rule, the winner tends to be the home team, with neither of these sides having won a league game away at the other since Liverpool staged a remarkable second half comeback from 2-0 down to win 3-2 back in October 2008. That seems to suggest City, as hosts, have the edge here -- but not by much.
Manchester City injuries and suspensions
Out: None. In doubt: Sergio Agüero, Wilfried Bony, Samir Nasri, Fabian Delph (hamstring); David Silva (ankle); Pablo Zabaleta (knee); Vincent Kompany (calf).
Liverpool injuries and suspensions
Out: Jon Flanagan, Joe Gomez, Danny Ings, Mamadou Sakho (knee); Jordan Henderson (foot); Jordan Rossiter (hamstring). In doubt: None.
City have no certain absentees, but plenty of injury doubts. Chief among them are star attackers Agüero and Silva, as well as captain Kompany. If neither Agüero nor Bony recover from their respective injuries, Raheem Sterling will likely start up top against his former club.
Liverpool have a string of injury problems, with the most important being to defender Sakho, midfielder Henderson and striker Ings. They’re all certain to miss out.
