The Champions League group stage is a thing eternally full of ups and downs. Rarely does a team just glide through the group stage without taking some lumps along the way, and in Group B, everyone has taken a lump or three. Take these two teams playing in England today. When Manchester United and CSKA Moscow faced off last month in Russia, both had a win and a loss on their record, then played each other to a standstill in a draw.
Manchester United vs. CSKA Moscow 2015: Time, TV schedule, team news for Champions League matchday 4
Manchester United and CSKA Moscow are dead even in Group B after drawing last time out. Will things be different after today?
Now, Manchester and CSKA have a chance to get one over on the other in the return match of the group stage, with Manchester hoping to use the home crowd at Old Trafford to their advantage. Whether that’s going to be enough to get a better result today has yet to be seen, but they’re not going to want to risk falling farther behind first-place Wolfsburg. Of course, CSKA won’t want to fall behind either, so this match could go down to the wire.
Key player -- Marouane Fellaini (Manchester United)
In a match like this, likely to wind up as a 90-minute battle, he who has the biggest man in midfield often gets the advantage. That gives Manchester an edge, but Fellaini’s size, power and high-effort play style is a potent combination that CSKA doesn’t have a match for. Is Fellaini a perfect player? No, not hardly. But he might be the perfect player for this match, and on this day, that’s all that matters.
Key matchup -- Daley Blind (Manchester United) vs. Seydou Doumbia (CSKA Moscow)
Blind has been the preferred man in the middle for Louis Van Gaal this season, even though he’s had some pretty shaky moments on their back line. Given his high workload wearing him and not-great moments lately, that could be the opening for Doumbia, who is ever the opportunist. Especially if Moscow can hold some early possession so Doumbia can try to rattle Blind, this could be a big day for the Ivorian striker.
Manchester United injuries and suspensions
Out: Antonio Valencia, Memphis Depay, Patrick McNair, Luke Shaw In doubt: Morgan Schneiderlin, James Wilson
CSKA Moscow injuries and suspensions
Out: Vasili Berezutski, Roman Eremenko
Valencia and Depay represent pretty big misses for Manchester, but if Schneiderlin can’t play after missing training this week, it would be a massive blow to their midfield. Of course, CSKA are missing Eremenko from their midfield, and he was arguably the man of the match the last time these two teams squared off.
