Andy Carroll will miss the rest of the season after his latest knee injury proved to be more severe than initially thought. Carroll, who has torn the medial ligament of his left knee, had been expected to miss six weeks at the most, but will now have surgery on Tuesday and will not play again in this campaign.
Andy Carroll out for the season
West Ham’s big man up front will miss the rest of the campaign.

Carroll has scored five goals this season, and while West Ham will doubtless miss his physical presence up front, they at least have other striking options in reserve. On an individual level, however, this latest injury is a serious blow for a player who only returned from an ankle ligament tear in November. Indeed, Carroll has been plagued by injuries since moving to East London: he picked up a hamstring strain on his debut in September 2012, twisted his knee a month later, and then damaged his heel in the last game of the 2012-13 season, which kept him out for seven months.
As well as missing the rest of West Ham’s push for European football, he will also miss England’s forthcoming fixtures, a Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania on 27 March, then a friendly against Italy four days later.
