The Champions League knockout stages return this week, and Tuesday’s games look to be quite a bit more competitive than the first week’s. Juventus and Borussia Dortmund could be the two most evenly-matched sides that face off in the Round of 16, with neither team presenting themselves as a clear favorite.

Could this be the Champions League’s most even tie?

As per usual, Juventus have been dominant in Italy. Roma and Napoli are putting together decent seasons, but neither is presenting a serious challenge to the Old Lady, who will win their 29th or 31st title this season, depending on who you ask. Dortmund, meanwhile, have been awful domestically. They’ve flirted with relegation, and while they certainly won’t finish in Germany’s bottom three, a top four finish looks nearly impossible at this stage.
However, it’s been a different story in Champions League. Dortmund won their group very comfortably, and on the evidence of their European performances, you’d think they were contenders to win a treble. Juventus were not nearly as good, dropping points at home against Atlético Madrid and losing twice on the road.
Both teams should have mostly full squads available, though Kevin Großkreutz is out for Dortmund, while Erik Durm Sebastian Kehl, Sven Bender, Mats Hummels, Jakub Błaszczykowski, Ciro Immobile and Kevin Kampl have all suffered minor injuries or illness recently. Kwadwo Asamoah is the only important player who will certainly miss out for Juve.
