Borussia Dortmund’s stadium closed because of a World War II bomb

It was defused safely.

A piece of unexploded ordinance, left over from World War II, was found in a parking area near Borussia Dortmund’s stadium, forcing the closing of the building and shutting down some of the club’s operations Thursday.

According to a city official, the bomb was found when aerial photographs of the stadium site were being examined. The British bomb was one of several million dropped by the Allies during heavy bombing of the city of Dortmund in the war.

Finding pieces that didn’t explode as intended is apparently fairly common in Germany, though still rather scary. Fortunately, no one was injured and authorities were able to safely defuse the bomb.

With everyone safe and the bomb being safely disposed of, there will no doubt be a flood of jokes involving the bomb and BVB’s up-and-down season.
