Number of 2015 MLS kits leak ahead of Jersey Week launches

Kit launches in world soccer are a big deal. It is just about impossible to launch a new design without it being leaked somewhere along the way be it intentionally or accidentally.

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Major League Soccer is in a world of its own when it comes to new kits due to the fact that the entire league has one manufacturer rather than individual teams picking their own partners.

As a result, when MLS teams launch new kits, they launch them en masse. For the league that calls the United States and Canada home, the product life cycle is normally two years as opposed to what we see in all of the world’s other majro leagues with kits replaced every single year. Because of that two year life cycle, MLS teams want to keep it fresh and they often do announce a new uniform every season, alternating between home and away (with the occasional third thrown in) every year

The MLS season is quickly approaching and even with Jersey Week almost upon us, the leakers have not waited for official announcements to show off what’s in the MLS pipeline. One store has published a number of the new kits online before (not so quickly) hitting the delete button and the new designs are now everywhere to be seen.

Columbus Crew

After their strong rebrand at the end of last season, the Crew’s first home kit with the new logo is a solid effort that is the club’s identity boiled down to what is arguably its purest form.

Houston Dynamo

The Dynamo could and probably should have had a home kit that would rival the likes of the Crews. Instead, there’s a strange creamsicle effect going on with a design decision that sees Houston’s orange fade to white on the front of the shirt like it had been partially dipped in a vat of bleach.

Portland Timbers

The Timbers have been very hit-or-miss with their kits since entering MLS in 2011. A pair of nice inaugural kits were replaced by designs that looked a bit like Ajax but were not quite there. Still, the third kits that Portland has used over the last few seasons have been superb. The new home kit invokes the chevron of the club’s old logo but does it in a really strange way. The element that houses the sponsor logo clashes with the triangular collar insert and doesn’t match up with any of the lines in Portland’s shirt or logo. All of that could lead one to ask: why?

Sporting Kansas City

Kansas City have had some of the more fashion-forward kits in Major League Soccer over the last few years. From argyle to horizontal bars to an asymmetrical home kit, it’s clear that SKC is not afraid to be a little bit out there. The club’s new home kit features a rugby-style button down collar similar to the one that Germany wore during the World Cup. The home kit features a large graph check pattern that covers the shirt from top to bottom and the design will definitely divide people into love it or hate it camps.

Toronto FC

Toronto’s new home kit is certainly a looker. The solid red body with black sponsor logos and stripes is clean throughout. The maple leaf element where a jock tag would normally be is a particularly nice touch.
