Sunderland have appointed former Rangers and Dutch national coach Dick Advocaat as head coach. Advocaat, 67, takes up the position on an interim basis until the end of the season following the dismissal of Gus Poyet.

— Sunderland AFC (@SunderlandAFC) March 17, 2015 Following Saturday's 4-0 home defeat to Aston Villa, Sunderland are currently one point above the relegation zone and are without a win in their last seven games. Only Aston Villa have scored fewer goals in this Premier League campaign, and though Poyet was able to secure their survival last season with a remarkable last few results, there was little to show that he might be able to repeat the feat this time around.
While Advocaat has never managed in English football, he spent two-and-a-half years north of the border with Rangers, twice winning the Scottish league title. He also has extensive experience in the international game, most notably taking the Netherlands to the quarter-finals of the 1994 World Cup and the semi-finals of Euro 2004. His most recent success at club level came when he led Zenit Saint Petersburg to the UEFA Cup in 2008.
