FIFA confirms 2022 World Cup final will be played on December 18

Soccer’s governing body will confirm the rest of the tournament’s format shortly.

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be played in November and December as expected, and FIFA has finally set a final date. FIFA spokesman Walter De Gregorio announced on Thursday that the tournament will conclude on December 18, which is Qatar’s national holiday.

FIFA’s executive committee is still debating the overall format of the tournament, though an announcement could be made on Friday. UEFA had recommended the final be played on December 23, and FIFA setting it earlier implies that the tournament will be shorter than previous World Cups. The fact that this World Cup will be played in the middle of the European club season also implies that there will be an abbreviated tournament.

While European clubs will be slightly less annoyed about this tournament if it takes place over fewer than 30 days than if it was stretched out for five to six weeks, it’s still taking place in the middle of their season. With this date set, they can finally start to address some of the challenges that go along with that.
