The likely leading managerial candidate for a number of jobs isn’t going anywhere this summer. On Tuesday morning, Atlético Madrid announced that Diego Simeone had signed a contract extension that runs through the 2019-20 season.
Backheel Breakfast: Diego Simeone staying with Atlético Madrid
La Liga is going to stay interesting for a while longer.

This might be an indication that Simeone thinks he can build a team at Atléti that regularly contends for trophies, even with Real Madrid in his backyard and Barca lurking in the same league. Based on what he’s done the year after losing Diego Costa, Thibaut Courtois and Felipe Luis, there’s a decent chance that’s the case.
It’s also pretty possible that Simeone looked at the potential job landscape and decided he’s not likely to do better this summer. The only big job that looks nearly certain to be open that would be available to him is at Manchester City. Pep’s not leaving Bayern Munich this summer, Luis Enrique’s keeping his job at Barcelona and Simeone moving to Real Madrid might incite a riot.
Plus, if a club like Manchester United or Chelsea ever want him, they’re probably not opposed to paying his buyout. Basically, everyone wins here. This goes especially for fans of Spanish football, who will get to watch a three-team league for at least one more season.
