Russia vs. Montenegro suspended after Igor Akinfeev is hit with a flare, later abandoned

Russia’s goalkeeper went down and play was halted immediately. The game resumed, but was eventually called off.

A Euro 2016 qualifying match between Russia and Montenegro was first suspended, then later abandoned on Friday. In the first half, a flare thrown from the crowd struck Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev. The incident occurred just one minute into the match, and the referee stopped play immediately.

Akinfeev went down and was loaded onto a stretcher, but there’s no word on his condition at the moment. Play resumed about 20 minutes later, with Yuri Lodigin replacing Akinfeev in goal for Russia.

At halftime, there were discussions about calling off the game, UEFA decided to let it continue.

But the crowd wasn’t brought under control, and the match was abandoned due to a fight shortly after Russia’s Roman Shirokov missed a penalty in the 66th minute. UEFA will now have to make a decision about the result and any potential consequences for Montenegro.
