For the second season in a row, the Manchester Derby is without some of its luster. The game had ascended to the level of El Clásico the the point of Wayne Rooney’s famous title-winning bicycle kick, but at least one of its participants has been outside of the title race in the last couple of seasons. This year, both are.

But this game is certainly not without importance for Manchester City, who are teetering on the edge of absolute disaster. Their title challenge might be over, but they have a bit of work left to do to ensure they finish in the top four. If they lose to Manchester United on Sunday, Liverpool will be ready to strike, and it’s not clear if Manuel Pellegrini will finish the season in his current job.
Over the last week, there’s been more talk about who could leave City than how they’ll play in this match. United, meanwhile, are looking pretty stable. They haven’t been quite as good as expected under Louis van Gaal, but if they avoid defeat in this game, they’ll likely coast into the Champions League and fans will see this season in which a bounceback mission was well accomplished.
Manchester United aren't facing the same kind of horrible injury issues that plagued them for most of the season, but they are without two important players. Robin van Persie is still hurt, while Jonny Evans is suspended. Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw are slight doubts, but should be available. Manchester City are only without Wilfried Bony for sure, but have one other major concern. Vincent Kompany is expected to play, but will not be 100 percent. He's still nursing a hamstring strain.
