The Super Clásico is always a massive fixture, even when Club America and Chivas Guadalajara aren’t competitive, but this is one of the more interesting and important matches between the two in a long time. America are top of the table, while Chivas are in third. This might be a Liguilla series preview as well as a rivalry match.

This year’s Super Clásico is one of the most important in years.

Don’t expect to see a high-scoring, high-octane classic in Guadalajara. Because Chivas entered this tournament knowing they were in a relegation fight, they’ve been very defensive, happy to grind out low-scoring matches. The previous Super Clásico, in the Apertura, was a horrible 0-0 draw with almost no chances. Don’t be stunned if this is a repeat.
America has the added consideration of the CONCACAF Champions League. They surprisingly gave up a poor result in the first leg at home on Wednesday, drawing Montreal Impact, 1-1. They have a long trip north midweek, and they need a high-scoring draw or a win to lift the trophy. It’s hard to believe that America will rest any stars in a Super Clásico, but it’ll certainly be tempting.
Chivas will be sweating over the fitness of Angel Reyna and Jair Pereira, while America goalkeeper Moises Muñoz could make his return from injury.
