3 things we learned from Atlético Madrid’s comfortable 2-0 win against Real Sociedad

Atlético Madrid only needed nine minutes to score not once, but twice on Real Sociedad, and they coasted to a 2-0 win on Tuesday evening. It’s hard to start the game conceding an own-goal on the third minute, but it all can always get worse, as Jerónimo Rulli’s mistake on Atléti’s second goal -- scored by Antoine Griezmann -- proved.

That wrapped things up, with Atléti’s defensive system is too good for David Moyes’ side to do dig out of the hole in which they put themselves. They didn’t even appear to try hard to claw back and earn a draw at the Vicente Calderón. Diego Simeone’s pupils easily controlled the rest of the game and enjoyed a pleasant second half at home.

Atlético will visit Málaga this weekend while Real Sociedad host Deportivo de la Coruña.

3 things we learned

  1. Atlético Madrid are still too good for most La Liga teams. Although Los Rojiblancos have not been playing very well lately, Real Sociedad never stood a chance against this team. Simeone and his men still have to find an answer to their playmaking problems and it will not be easy for them to contain Sevilla and Valencia's efforts to earn a spot in next year's Champions League, but the rest of the teams in La Liga outside of the top five simply don't have what it takes to conquer the Calderón.
  2. Real Sociedad were overachieving lately. Moyes deserves credit for turning things around at the Basque club, and it's true that they are getting good results that have allowed them to rank 10th in the table. However, the quality of their play is not great and Moyes is currently facing some criticism for his team's poor and cautious display over the last few games.
  3. Antoine Griezmann has arguably been this season's best signing. The French attacker struggled early in the season, but he has adapted well to Simeone's playbook and has earned an undisputed starting spot in this Atlético Madrid squad. At age 24, he will only get better. Right now, Simeone will have to choose between Mario Mandzukic or Fernando Torres for a place in his lineup, because Griezmann's contribution to the team is irreplaceable.
