Despite the ongoing corruption scandal currently enveloping FIFA, the world's governing body for football is still planning on holding elections for its presidential position, held by Sepp Blatter since 1998. Blatter is generally regarded as the runaway favorite to win re-election, as he has been every other time he's run, but since the arrests in Switzerland and all the fallout since then, there's been a growing movement against him.
US Soccer not voting for Sepp Blatter for FIFA president
Sunil Gulati, president of US Soccer, has declared that the USA will be voting for Sepp Blatter’s opponent, Prince Ali bin Al Hussein, and Canada is following suit.
Several FIFA representatives have demanded that the election be postponed given the current turmoil, but if the election does go ahead, several major players have already declared that they'll be voting for Blatter's opponent, Jordan representative and FIFA vice-president Prince Ali bin Al Hussein. Now, United States Soccer president Sunil Gulati is among them:
BREAKING: Sunil Gulati, US Soccer pres, says USA will vote for Prince Ali in #FIFA election. Canada Soccer Assoc. also supporting Prince Ali
— Sam Borden (@SamBorden) May 28, 2015 That’s two more voices to add to a growing list standing against Blatter. Even UEFA chief Michel Platini is reportedly encouraging European FA heads to vote for Prince Ali as well, largely be cause of the Jordanian’s pledge to fight against the corruption that has plagued FIFA for decades and bring significant reform to the organization. It’s likely that they’re fighting an uphill battle, but any progress is good. It certainly seems like Prince Ali stands a much better chance at knocking Blatter off his perch now than he did two days ago.
