Chile advanced to the Copa America quarterfinals by winning their group as expected, but they’ll face off against a slightly different opponent than the one they anticipated seeing. Uruguay struggled a bit in group play without Luis Suarez, finishing third in their group and dropping into a very difficult quarterfinal.

Without his running mate up top, Edinson Cavani hasn’t looked like the best version of himself. Young striker Diego Rolan and former wonderkid turned Hull Tiger Abel Hernandez haven’t been good at all in this tournament, and Uruguay will need one or both of them to step up in this match.

Cavani might also miss out, due to his father’s recent arrest following a fatal car accident. Uruguay have yet to confirm whether he’ll be available for this match.

And while Cavani potentially misses time for family issues, Arturo Vidal will continue to miss no time despite allegedly drunk driving his Ferrari and crashing it in Santiago. He started a couple of days after getting picked up by police and he should start again on Wednesday.

This game will be played in less than ideal conditions, with Santiago currently experiencing an environmental emergency for dense smog. Car travel and factory operations are restricted in the city and residents are being advised against strenuous activity outdoors, but this match will go on as scheduled.

Key player: Alexis Sanchez

Uruguay's central defense pairing has been solid in this tournament, and it'll be up to Sanchez to create some magic to beat them. Look for him to drop between the lines in the hopes that he can draw a center back out of position, then find one of his teammates with an assist. He scores plenty, but he might do a bit more creating than shooting in this one.

Key matchup: Set pieces

Chile play without a true central defender, and it hurts them on set plays. Even if they defend well, there's only so much 5'9 defenders can do on aerial balls. Uruguay have looked dangerous on attacking set pieces and might spring an upset with a goal or two from them, even if they get seriously outplayed.
