Group D is the toughest in the 2015 World Cup, and the two teams who aren’t playing the United States on Tuesday are going to see their first game as an opportunity to grab some points. Sweden will feel like they need all three points against Nigeria to have a chance to win the group, while the Super Falcons will probably be thrilled with a point.
Sweden vs. Nigeria, World Cup 2015: Start time, TV schedule and live stream
The group of death kicks off with a must-win for the Swedes.
Nigeria continue to be the best team in Africa, but competitors have yet to emerge to really push them in CAF. As a result, the only top competition they get is the odd friendly here and there, plus the World Cup. They have the talent to hang with anyone, but only a small handful of their players have World Cup and top professional experience to draw on.
Sweden enter this World Cup knowing that the window is closing on some of their biggest stars. Lotta Schelin is 31 and Caroline Seger is 30, so it might be now or never for them.
Key player: Caroline Seger (Sweden)
Schelin is Sweden’s biggest star and one of the deadliest goal scorers in the world, but she might not get a chance to hit the back of the net if Seger isn’t at her best. Sitting behind Schelin, Seger is Sweden’s top playmaker, and she’s going to have to make some excellent creative passes to set up scoring chances. Nigeria aren’t going to be easily beaten with crosses or long balls.
Asisat Oshoala and Desire Oparanozie are dangerous attackers, but their team isn’t going to see a lot of the ball. Most of Nigeria’s decent chances are going to come on direct attacks, which they’ll have to make the most of. Sweden’s defense is very experienced, but they don’t have the best defensive record in 2015, so it won’t be surprising if Nigeria manage to score.
