Ventura Alvarado victimized in unreal own goal

The USMNT defender had a very bad day.

Jean-Yves Ahern-USA TODAY Sports

Club America lost to Atlas 3-1 on Saturday night in Liga MX play, thanks in large part to this mind-numbingly awful own goal from United States international defender Ventura Alvarado to gift Atlas their second goal.

That’s the kind of own goal that you look at and just feel awful over. Alvarado was just trying to clear a cross, but got his timing and body positioning all wrong.

It doesn't help matters that Alvarado was directly responsible for the other two goals scored against Club America, failing to close down a free runner on Atlas' first goal, and badly botching a clearance for their third. Coming on the heels of a poor Gold Cup stint with the U.S. national team, it's starting to look like Alvarado may just need a break for his own well-being.
