Premier League Sunday scores: Sergio Aguero is already in top form

City are your extremely, extremely too early title favorites.

The Premier League saved their marquee games for Sunday this week, and both were wildly entertaining -- especially for people who hate Chelsea. Jose Mourinho’s men got obliterated by Manchester City, while Arsenal squeaked out a win against Crystal Palace in a wild track meet of a match.

Sunday’s scores

Crystal Palace 1-2 Arsenal

Manchester City 3-0 Chelsea

Mikel Arteta’s revival is good news for Arsenal’s rivals

It’s a classic Arsene Wenger scenario. He might need a new signing in a certain position, but he might not. He gives one of his fringe players in that position a run-out. They perform above expectations. Wenger decides that he has enough cover in that position and he doesn’t need to buy. The Gunners do well enough to avoid disaster and comfortably finish top four, but ultimately lack the quality to contend for the title.

As nice as it is to see Mikel Arteta playing well, this is a disaster for Arsenal and a big boost for their rivals, because it’ll convince Wenger to not bid for William Carvalho, a Bender brother or anyone else he might have been considering for the role. He’ll conclude that Arteta and Francis Coquelin are good enough, and they are ... for fourth place.

Sergio Aguero is already in top form

In case you thought a run to the Copa America final and lack of a preseason was going to keep Sergio Aguero from playing his best for City until mid-September, think again. This opening goal in their win over Chelsea was his third shot on target, the previous two denied by Asmir Begovic with a pair of excellent saves. As long as Aguero is fully fit, City are one of the league’s top teams, and he was one of the biggest reasons for their clear superiority over the Champions on Sunday.
