Sunderland has the worst ever record through 10 Premier League games

Arsenal looked under threat for six minutes. Then they dismantled Sunderland easily.

Sunderland is winless through their first 10 Premier League games, sitting bottom of the table with just two points. That’s the worst start in history, but it didn’t have to be that way. They started the second half of their game against Arsenal strongly, eventually won a penalty, and looked like they had a chance to win a point. It took less than 15 minutes for things to fall apart completely.

Arsenal’s second goal went in just six minutes after Jermain Defoe converted from the spot to get the Black Cats into the game, and the floodgates opened from there. Sunderland defended poorly, letting in two more simple goals. In the 65th minute, the home fans were singing for their team, and by the 77th minute, they were all flooding towards the exit.

It’s possible that next week’s game against Bournemouth is a must-win for David Moyes. The teams in 17th place up to mid-table look stronger than usual, with an influx of television money giving every Premier League team plenty of cash to strengthen in the summer. An international break would give the Sunderland board an extra week to find a replacement, so failure to improve significantly against the Cherries could give them a reason to move on from Moyes.
