Both Tottenham Hotspur and Bayer Leverkusen are desperate for a Champions League win to boost their standing in their group, but only one team can win this match. With Monaco threatening to pull away in the standings if they can find a win against CSKA Moscow at home, both of these teams need all three points if they’re going to stay in the hunt for the top spot in the group, and that desperation might wind up being fuel for an exciting match.
For Tottenham, it seems like forever since they’ve seen a win. Wednesday will mark exactly one month since their last victory, a then-triumphant clash over Manchester City that seemed to be propelling them to bigger and better things. A string of injuries since then, though, has Spurs struggling, especially without key striker Harry Kane. They’ve scored just three goals in five matches since that last win, and while they’ve only lost once in that time, it still feels like Tottenham are struggling in a bad way.
Bayer are faring little better, sitting all the way down in 10th place in the Bundesliga and winning only five matches across all competitions since the season began. They’ve yet to lose a Champions League match, but their three draws are worth only three points, and they need a win if they’re going to make sure they advance to the knockout rounds, or even to make sure they’re not bounced from Europe entirely. They, too, have only won once in the last month, though that victory came in a tough road match against Wolfsburg this past weekend. If they can use that as a launchpad to a big away performance at Wembley Stadium, they could be well-set to add to Tottenham’s misery.
