But more than that, Crystal Palace’s struggles in the EPL this season allows Chelsea the chance to further add to the struggles of one of their local rivals. Palace are just three points above the relegation zone and while a loss in this match won’t put them into it — even if Swansea City or Hull City win, goal differential will keep Palace above them for now — it would put them right on the edge of a place that Palace and their fans don’t want to be in.
That raises the stakes considerably for Crystal Palace, and if they can find a way to step up and bloody Chelsea’s nose to keep themselves safe, then they will do everything they can to do just that.
