2016's Premier League action reaches a spectacular climax on New Year's Eve, with Liverpool taking on title rivals Manchester City at Anfield. The two teams head into this match separated by just a place and a point in the league table, with the Merseysiders having a slight edge over their Mancunian opponents.

Both teams head into this encounter on the back of three straight victories, though second-placed Liverpool still find themselves six points adrift of league leaders Chelsea. With the Blues having looked so prolific at the top of the table, both neither Liverpool nor City can afford many more slip-ups on the home stretch.

Three big things to know

1. Liverpool will be without the injured pair of Danny Ings and Marko Grujić, while Philippe Coutinho, and Joel Matip face late fitness tests. City will be without Vincent Kompany, Ilkay Gündogan, and John Stones, while Fabian Delph isn't yet likely to return after an injury layoff.

2. Liverpool are still unbeaten at Anfield this season, though City have won seven of their first nine games away from the Etihad so far. There isn’t much separating these two teams on the form guide.

3. If there's one thing this match promises, it's goals. With 45, Liverpool have scored more than anyone else in the league this season; City's 39 is good enough to tie them for second with Arsenal.
