Chelsea would love to extend their lead atop the EPL table, but they’ve got a tough task at hand against Stoke.

Chelsea are riding high and having a lot of fun atop the Premier League right now, running with a six-point lead over second-placed Liverpool and playing extraordinarily well under Antonio Conte’s guidance. They have a chance to extend that lead with another win and a little luck in other matches, but Stoke City are never an easy enough opponent to take a win for granted.

That said, Mark Hughes’ side is badly battered by injuries and a suspension to key attacker Marko Arnautovic, and they haven’t won in any of their last four matches, including heavy losses to Liverpool and Arsenal. That kind of form will make it harder for Stoke to rise to the challenge at hand, though Hughes and Stoke have a habit of popping up and putting in a huge performance at very unexpected moments.

How many times over the years have we seen an in-form giant host a struggling smaller side, get cocky, and then get punched in the mouth three or four times en route to a shock loss? Especially with Chelsea only having given up one goal in the month of December so far, if Stoke can score early, it could upset Chelsea’s balance and confidence enough to really open up an opportunity for a memorable and surprising outcome.
