Manchester City will look to move a step closer to guaranteeing Champions League football with a win away at high-flying Southampton on Sunday. Manuel Pellegrini's side will have to shift their concentration away from the looming Champions League semifinal second leg against Real Madrid if they're to do so: Southampton are certainly good enough to punish any complacency.

The Saints currently find themselves down in eighth place in the table, with Ronald Koeman's side provisionally only five points adrift of fifth-placed Manchester United. It has been another impressive season for a team that continues to cope with high levels of player turnover, and they'll be looking to benefit from valuable home support on Sunday. They've won all but two of their eight league matches at St. Mary's since Christmas, and a close match should be in the offing.

Key question: Will Manuel Pellegrini rotate?

With the biggest game of City's season so far coming at the Bernabéu on Wednesday, coach Pellegrini may well take this opportunity to rest some of his best players. The likes of Sergio Agüero, Kevin De Bruyne and Vincent Kompany might be made to settle for spots on the bench, ensuring they head into their Champions League tie in the best of condition.

Recent history

Despite Southampton's recent resurgence, they've found life difficult against City. The Blues have won four straight games against the Saints, and haven't lost away at St. Mary's since 2013. Remarkably, only three of the players that started for Southampton that day still ply their trade at the club; City, on the other hand, have retained seven.

Southampton injuries and suspensions

Out: Florin Gardoș, Charlie Austin (knee). In doubt: None.

Manchester City injuries and suspensions

Out: Yaya Touré (unspecified muscle); David Silva (hamstring). In doubt: Samir Nasri (unspecified muscle).

Southampton will be without the long-term injured duo of Gardoș and Austin, while City midfielders Touré and Silva are both sidelined.
