The end of the Premier League season is fast approaching, and there’s only a handful of high-profile matches left to go. One of them is Liverpool hosting Chelsea on Wednesday, a battle of two traditional EPL powers fallen in the table and trying to find new footing.

Anfield will be hopping as Liverpool face one of their biggest rivals in their last home match of the season, Hoping to spur on their team to a magnificent performance not just in this match, but next week in the Europa League final as well. It’s going to be a loud and raucous crowd, one Jurgen Klopp and company will be hoping to feed from — and one that Guus Hiddink and Chelsea will be hoping to silence.

What’s at stake

Well ... nothing.

Barring some bizarre change of fate, Liverpool aren’t finishing in fifth to earn a Europa League place. It’s mathematically possible, but realistically isn’t happening. Besides, their focus is on a greater goal: winning the Europa League final in a week. Nothing that happens in this match will change that goal or that focus.

Chelsea don’t really have anything to play for either. They can’t catch Liverpool in the table to move up a spot. Finishing lower in the table isn’t going to hurt them. Sure, punching Liverpool in the teeth would be fun, there’s no love lost between these two sides, but there’s no other real incentive for them to step up right now.
